MT5 proxy setup on Windows
The short answer
On Windows, open Tools → Options → Server in MetaTrader 5 (MT5) and tick Enable proxy server. Press Proxy…, type the server, a colon and the port in the one Server field, then add your login and password. MT5 connects to our server, which connects to your broker.
Our server in your broker’s city opens a local connection to your broker.
When you click Buy, your order crosses the internet in small pieces of data. If one drops, your chart and next order wait while your computer recovers it. The farther you are from your broker, the longer each wait.
Traders Proxy sits between MetaTrader 5 (MT5) and your broker. MT5 connects to our nearest server, and our server in your broker’s city connects to your broker.
If data drops on that local link, our server recovers it inside your broker’s city. Trading ports go first when a server is busy, and broker addresses stay warm in memory.
What do you need before you start?
- MT5 on Windows 10 or later, on a current build, that connects to your broker without the proxy. Then any later problem is in the proxy setting.
- A Traders Proxy plan, with the server nearest you and your broker’s city picked under Connect in your dashboard.
- The Server, Login and Password rows from Your values for your platform, on the MT5 tab.
Copy the values instead of typing them, because one wrong character fails the test. Use your Traders Proxy login and password, not your broker’s. Changing the server nearest you changes the Server value, while changing your broker’s city keeps it the same.
How do you set the proxy in MT5 on Windows?
Warning. Check your broker’s terms
If your broker prohibits proxies, don’t use one. Traders Proxy doesn’t change what your broker allows.
MT5 proxy setup on Windows in six steps
- 01
Open the settings
In MT5, choose Tools → Options, or press Ctrl+O. Then open the Server tab. The proxy setting lives there, inside MT5, so your other programs keep your normal internet.
- 02
Turn the proxy on
Tick Enable proxy server. That switches on the Proxy… button, so press it.
- 03
Choose the type
In the selector to the right of the Server field, choose
SOCKS5. Choose the type before the port, because each type has its own port.HTTPalso works. MetaQuotes removedSOCKS4in build 5660 (27 February 2026), and we don’t support it. - 04
Type the server and port
In the Server field, type the server, a colon, then the port for that type. MT5 has no separate port field.
- Server
address, port
MetaQuotes says this field takes an IP address and doesn’t say whether a name works. If Test fails on a value pasted as shown, contact us.
- 05
Add your login and password
Type your Traders Proxy login and password in the Login and Password fields.
MetaQuotes says to leave both blank when a proxy needs none. Traders Proxy needs both.
- 06
Press Test, then OK
Press Test. It reports a problem if a setting is wrong, so you find out now and not in the middle of a trade. When it passes, press OK.
MetaQuotes says changes take effect after OK. Then check for live prices in Market Watch, and reopen the dialog once to confirm it kept your values.
Your other apps, your own internet and the distance to your broker don’t change.
Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Everything else stays on your normal internet, so streaming and downloads don’t use your plan’s data.
Ping is the time data takes to go there and back. We don’t promise lower ping. Distance sets the minimum. No proxy can move your broker closer.
Our part helps only on the connection between our server and your broker, and it doesn’t shorten the distance. Data lost between you and our server is recovered between those two. If your own Wi-Fi is weak, we can’t make it stronger.
MetaQuotes doesn’t say whether news or chart history use the setting. We claim nothing either way.
What if Test reports a problem?
- Test reports a problem. MetaQuotes says that means a setting is wrong. Copy your values again, and check the type is
SOCKS5orHTTP. - Test fails on the Server value. Check there is a colon between the server and the port, and that the port matches the type. If a pasted value still fails, contact us.
- The values are gone when you reopen the dialog. Enter them again, press Test and OK, then reopen it once more. If they won’t stay, contact us.
- MT5 can’t connect even without the proxy. Check your build. MetaQuotes says builds older than 4410 couldn’t connect to broker servers after 1 December 2024.
- A firewall or security program is in the way. It can block the connection, and Test will report a problem. Check its allow list for MT5 instead of switching it off.
- You can’t find the Proxy… button. Tick Enable proxy server first. If it’s still missing, try the standard terminal from MetaQuotes’ download page.

Frequently asked questions
Does the setup differ on Windows 11?
No. MetaQuotes’ help doesn’t name Windows 11, and nothing in it changes the steps. Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 stopped getting MT5 updates after build 5320, so use Windows 10 or later.
Do I need to restart MT5 after setting the proxy?
Not for the proxy. MetaQuotes says changes take effect after OK. If MT5 doesn’t reconnect, close it and open it again.
Where do I type the port?
In the Server field, after a colon. MT5 has no separate port field.
Do I need administrator rights or a switched-off antivirus?
No. Nothing in MetaQuotes’ help asks for either. A security program can block the connection, and Test will then report a problem, so check its allow list instead.
Can I try it on a demo account first?
Yes. A demo account is a low-risk first run. Press Test, then check that prices move in Market Watch.
Will my broker mind?
Check your broker’s terms. If your broker prohibits proxies, don’t use one. Traders Proxy doesn’t change what your broker allows.

Generic or free proxies fail MetaTrader's proxy Test button
“Server — enter here the IP address and port number of the server separated by a colon. To the right of this field, select the type of proxy server: HTTP, SOCKS4 or SOCKS5. In HTTP mode, NTLM authentication is also supported”
How our system handles it. Use SOCKS5 or HTTP, whichever your platform offers. Enter our server, login and password in MetaTrader’s own Proxy window.

Where it stops. MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 support SOCKS5 and HTTP (not SOCKS4). A passing Test confirms the route reaches our server.
MetaTrader 5 will not use a proxy running on the same computer
“what im talking about is that mt5 cannot connect to proxy servers on the pc , it can only connect to remote proxies but when i want to connect to 127.0.0.1 it cannot connect. for some reason it rejects the loopback address”
How our system handles it. You don't need a tunnel app on your computer. Your platform connects to our server through its own Proxy setting.

- Built-in
SOCKS5loginPrimary
Where it stops. Your platform connects through its built-in Proxy window, with no extra app to install. Some MetaTrader 5 builds have separate proxy-window bugs.
The platform's proxy setting does not cover everything (WebRequest, MQL5.community, Market)
“It seems that WebRequest ignores proxy configuration, event if configured both on MT5 and operating system.”
Why a proxy does not change this. Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Everything else stays on your normal internet.
- Only the app you set up is routedBoundary
Where it stops. Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Expert Advisor web calls, custom DLLs and Market downloads may still use your normal internet.
'Old tick' lines in the Journal
“<old Tick> in itself shouldn't be a problem but can be a pointer to break/s in communication with the broker server Check your internet connection for speed (both ways) and packet loss statistics”
Why a proxy does not change this. Traders Proxy changes the route your platform uses to reach your broker. It doesn't change quotes, fills or what your Journal says.
Where it stops. MetaQuotes staff confirm that Old tick journal entries are filtered out by the terminal and logged for information only.
